Recovery Month, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and the first full cohort of T.I.M.E. begins Tuesday.
Our 12-week recovery program begins Tuesday, September 1.
August was a month of finishing things. The 12 phases of T.I.M.E. went public. Ending the Statute went live and started gathering names and signatures. The Circle kept growing week over week. Thank you for being part of all that.
Now we look toward September. It is National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and it is also the month the first full cohort of T.I.M.E. opens. Restoring is the word we keep coming back to, putting back what was lost.
A Note From Jan
Making Room
As I watch everything happening at the Foundation right now, I keep thinking about how much can change when survivors have somewhere to go where they are understood. Healing is such a personal thing, and no two people are going to experience it the same way. Some days you may feel like you have come so far, and other days something can bring you right back to a place you thought you had already worked through. I have learned that both can be part of this.
That is one of the reasons I am so excited to see T.I.M.E. begin its first full cohort this month. It is also why Survivor Circle means so much to me. I want survivors to have places where they can show up without having to have everything figured out first.
There is a lot happening at JBF, from T.I.M.E. and Survivor Circle to SPOT6, Trauma Interrupted, and Ending the Statute. They may all look a little different, but the reason behind them is the same. We want to prevent abuse when we can, and when someone has already been hurt, we want them to know there are people willing to walk beside them. I am so grateful you are one of those people.
With love, Jan
A Note From Austen
Where T.I.M.E. came from
In 2014 I picked up my first year of sobriety. My first home group was 3rd & Gardner in Hollywood, and I had spent about a year setting up the chairs in that room before that night ever came. Tada C, my first sponsor, handed me my cake, my mom was standing right there, I said my minute into the microphone, and then I sat back down.
What I remember is not the cake. It is sitting down afterward, looking over at my mom, who was so proud of me, and thinking about what she had lived through. It was the same family, and the trauma took a completely different shape in each of us. She never wanted to drink and use the way I did.
Then came the thought that would not leave me. There was a room for me. There was a program, a chair to set up, a cake, and a hundred people who understood exactly what I meant without me explaining it. There was nothing like that for what happened to her, or for what happened to me long before any of the drinking started. I did not have the language for it then. I just knew the gap was enormous.
It took years to build an answer. My mom and I put our heads together, and T.I.M.E. is what came out of it. Trauma Interrupted, Mitigated and Expressed. A supportive program for trauma recovery. It is free, and it always will be.
If you are already in recovery for something else, this is not instead of that. Keep both. Some of us need both.

National Recovery Month
What does recovery look like when there is no starting date?
In some recovery spaces, people celebrate the anniversary of the day their recovery began. That works when there is a specific date to count from. Trauma often does not work that way. There may not be one identifiable day when healing began, and we never want someone feeling behind because they cannot point to one.
So we celebrate something else: bellybutton birthdays. It is simply your actual birthday, and it gives us a pretty great excuse to celebrate the people in this community.
We only need the month and day, never the year, and nobody has to take part. Birthdays carry complicated feelings for some survivors, so if you would rather let yours quietly pass, that is completely okay too.

T.I.M.E. Cohort One begins September 1
Trauma Interrupted, Mitigated and Expressed
After months of building, testing, listening, changing things, and learning from survivors, we are ready for the first full public cohort of T.I.M.E. It is a free, twelve-week peer-led program created for adult survivors, with each week focusing on a different phase and giving people room to talk, learn, reflect, and connect.
Carrying this alone has not been working.
That idea sits right at the beginning of T.I.M.E., and we think a lot of survivors will recognize themselves in it. You do not need to know exactly where you are in healing or have the perfect explanation for why you want to join. Sometimes you just know you are ready to try something different.
Cohort One meets every Tuesday from September 1 through November 17. There are two meeting times each week, 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM Mountain. Both sessions cover the same phase, so you can take whichever time works, and you can switch between them week to week.
T.I.M.E. is free, and it always will be. Cohort One is for adults eighteen and older. It is peer-led, and it is not therapy, a replacement for professional mental health care, or a crisis service. Sign-ups are in the events calendar inside Survivor Circle.
And if you notice two new faces around T.I.M.E., meet Dotty and Spotty. We have a feeling you will be seeing quite a bit of them.

A child's time to speak should not be decided by a clock.
Ending the Statute began with a pledge Jan wrote and signed herself. At the heart of it is a simple belief: survivors of childhood sexual abuse should not lose their chance at justice because they were not able or ready to speak before a legal deadline.
No more silence, shadows or dark corners for those that have been abused by someone they know, love or trust.
You do not have to be a survivor or share a story to sign it. If you believe a child's time to speak should not run out, you can stand with us. Jan signed first, and our goal is to put 10 million names beside hers.
Circle Meetings are every Saturday at Noon Mountain Time, and each week has its own theme. The community calendar keeps filling up with many other activities, such as meditation, a book club, classes, music, art, and time together that do not require anyone to tell their story.

SPOT6 continues to grow as JBF's awareness and prevention framework. It helps people recognize the stages of grooming, understand how abuse happens inside trusted relationships, and feel more prepared to notice when something is not right.
We are developing resources and courses for schools, districts, families, and communities. Prevention cannot depend on children finding exactly the right words. The adults around them need to know what to look for too.
They may look like separate projects, but they are pieces of the same goal. We want fewer children to experience abuse, more adults to recognize grooming before it becomes another child's story, survivors to have somewhere to go when they are ready, and laws that understand survivors deserve time.
JBF is survivor-led and community-funded. Donations keep Survivor Circle and T.I.M.E. free, bring SPOT6 into more communities, produce Trauma Interrupted, and carry the advocacy behind Ending the Statute.
There is still a lot we want to build, and we are really glad you are here while we build it. Thank you for reading, sharing our work, joining the conversations, and helping someone else find us when they need us.
